The concept for this editorial was fortified during my reading of a passage in ‘The Tiger’ by John Vaillant, where one of the characters argues that “The most terrifying and important test for a human being is to be in absolute isolation… A human being is a very social creature, and ninety percent of what she does is done only because other people are watching. Alone, with no witnesses, she starts to learn about herself — who is she really?”
